Paul has put together an easy reference map to look up Maidenhead grid squares within the 5th calling area. Click on the green map to see the grid squares for each state. He made it easy.
The Maidenhead Locator System is a geographic coordinate system used by amateur radio operators. Dr. John Morris (G4ANB) originally devised the system. A group of VHF managers meeting in Maidenhead, England in 1980 adopted it. The Maidenhead Locator System supplants the older QRA locator system with one usable outside of Europe.
Maidenhead locators are also commonly referred to as grid locators or grid squares, despite being decidedly non-squarish on a Mercatur projection map (such as GoogleMaps). In Texas, grid squares are approximately 170x100 miles, getting decidedly smaller in the area where the snow flies. Click here for a whole-earth grid map.
